CANINES MUST BE
ON LEASH AT ALL

HANDLERS MUST CLEAN
UP AFTER THEIR
CANINES.
ABOUT THE SEARCH AND RESCUE ACADEY:

The Search and Rescue Academy was created in 1991 by the Indiana State Emergency
Management Agency to train disaster response K-9s and their handlers to cope with the
increasing dangers of terrorism and natural disasters. The Search and Rescue Academy has
conducted training events that have been attended by teams from all over the world. Teams
from China, Japan, Puerto Rico, Slovakia, Ireland, England, and Germany, as well as The
Federal Emergency Management Agency USAR task forces and many local groups have
participated in courses covering all types of K-9 search methods, confined space rescue and
medicine techniques, hazardous materials response, ground search techniques, and terrorism
response. Of note, 53 of the K-9 teams that were deployed to the Oklahoma City bombing in
1995 had received training at our facility.

The PSTI Search and Rescue Academy has many things to offer! Our most unique feature is
our three rubble piles designed for both confined space training and disaster dog training.
Each pile has been carefully designed to promote a safe challenge for both humans and K-9s
at the basic, intermediate, and advanced levels. We also have on site a vertical rescue shaft,
hazardous materials tanker, 15-station K-9 agility course, and numerous areas for
wilderness training.

The Search and Rescue Academy is proud to be hosting the Canine Search and Recovery l
2001 Conference. We hope that everyone attending leaves with new information and
techniques that they can take back to their community and share with fellow search and
rescue responders.
